Coaching in youth work

What is coaching?

“A dynamic goal oriented relationship between at least 2 people where the coach supports and empowers the coachee to find their own way! Coaching is caring, understanding, guiding, listening, and empowering young people…”

Coaching helps young people to assess and address their needs, unleashes their potential and empowers them to take charge of their life. It is a low cost, high impact solution. Through coaching young people can develop feelings of security and feel as if someone takes care for them and is here to help and support them in their transition and access to rights, in overcoming the obstacles that they are facing. Coaching provides support in the development of professional and personal competences. It helps young people in setting goals, assessingand further developing of their potential, motivating themselves in realization of the set goals. During the coaching process young people are empowered to detecting opportunities and to engage themselves in education and/or trainings that further deepen their employability and make them stronger in the fight against labour market and social exclusion. The coach leads the young person in increasing their belief in themselves and creating a positive self – perception but also a positive perception of other people despite the differences. It can awaken young people’s will to participate in society and use their potential for the development of the community. One of the greatest values of coaching is in its ability to reduce inequalities among young people and to restore and demonstrate faith in humanity and solidarity, non-discrimination and respect for human dignity.

USMA Caselle

In current times, establish a good managing of people is necessary to pursue the objectives of every company. Being able to manage people is the make-or-break skill that will determine whether you build a good business or an amazing one. Indeed, the complexity of societies and organisation impose the inescapable need to manage people effectively. Nowadays, teamwork is composed of people coming from different backgrounds, with different culture and habits, and make them cooperate is a crucial task for every organization. This aspect of managing people is particularly true in one of the last projects USMA took part, called Sustainable youth work. Indeed, the project aims to train young people coming from different cultures and backgrounds, to cooperate for a shared goal, namely empowering youth workers skills. The managing part of people is particularly evident within the creation of the intercultural teams of work, which characterises the study visits. During these occasions, a group of eight people coming from four different nationalities are asked to cooperate in defining common strategies in developing youth workers skills. The success of those activities is determined both by the use of a common tool, namely an online course preliminary to take part in the activity called MOOC, and by their will to share their expertise with the other to reinforce existing approaches.
